Can an Indian Occupational Therapist Work in the UK?
Although there are currently 41,000 Occupational Therapists (OTs) working in the UK, there’s still a big shortage in the profession. The point-based system that’s in-place for ‘skilled workers’ has Occupational Therapists on the Home Office Healthcare and Education Shortage Occupations List (conditions are different for EEA citizens). The demand for OTs is increasing as the NHS looks to integrate its acute and community services and provide more therapy interventions.
India is seen as one of the best countries to recruit OTs from because of its applicants’ clinical abilities and their great understanding of local community care. If you are an Indian Occupational Therapist and you’re considering a change and would like to progress your career in the UK, you might be wondering if it’s possible for you to relocate, and how you might go about that. The answer is yes, it is possible! Check out our range of OT roles.
What Qualifications do I Need to Work as an Occupational Therapist in the UK?
To work as an Occupational Therapist (OT) in the UK from India, you’ll need to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) – the regulator for health and care professionals in the UK. To be registered, you’ll be required to meet a range of HCPC criteria, such as the correct qualifications – e.g., a three-year degree in occupational therapy recognised by the HCPC - and CPD requirements. There are also a number of national policies for each of the four UK countries that applicants will need to familiarise themselves with – a simple way to do this is to become a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT).
You will also need to have completed your International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam – more information in our blog.
What About Relocating from India to the UK – Who Provides the Support?
If you’re looking to work for an NHS Trust in the UK, more often then not the Trust will support you directly with your relocation (there will be information about this within the job specification, or it is something you can ask about during the interview process). If you decide to apply for one of our occupational therapy roles, there’s also some relocation support Migrate can provide too – if you have any questions, please do contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Migrate only works with employers that provide sponsorship and pay for relocations, so feel reassured that, with us, everything will be taken care of.
